Pro Bono Vs. Stereotypes
Pro bono work, meaning “for the public good,” consists of legal assistance provided free of charge in matters of significant social, cultural or economic relevance. Within this framework, our firm opposes persistent narratives that associate Sicily with criminal stereotypes, representations long considered commercially convenient but highly damaging to identity and economic credibility.
Such portrayals undermine cultural dignity and weaken international trust in Sicilian products, services and enterprises. Our pro bono activity therefore focuses on countering defamatory or misleading content that produces reputational and economic harm.
Our advocacy began in 2019 with a successful intervention against a defamatory advertising campaign by a European airline promoting Sicily through improper references to criminality. The removal of the campaign marked an important precedent in protecting the island’s image. Since then, we have continued to challenge narratives generating significant international impact.
Pro bono interventions are discretionary and limited to cases involving serious collective reputational risk. The experience developed through these initiatives now supports advisory work assisting other communities and institutions facing persistent negative stereotypes, promoting responsible representation and long-term international credibility.
